Singing Classes

Stretching children's imagination
Hit the high notes with Singing, Dance and Drama
Singing is often seen as the poor relation to dance and drama, almost an afterthought when compiling curriculums. At StageCoach Theatre Arts singing classes are an essential element in teaching performing arts for children. Singing classes give kids the ability to develop their skills and boosts a childs self-confidence enormously. Qualities that will help them take their place comfortably on the world stage.

At StageCoach Theatre Arts our singing lessons last for one hour of a three-hour session. Children learn to breath correctly, warm up their voice through a range of 'fun' vocal exercises, and then begin to learn a wide, age-appropriate repertoire of songs. Children are encouraged to explore lyrics and appreciate the association between words and music.

StageCoach is all about performing arts for children, therefore, as well as singing classes, students also do an hour of dance and an hour of drama work. These three key disciplines - singing, dancing, acting, lead effortlessly into musical theater work, which students love. Many of our students join StageCoach because they are drawn to one particular aspect of the performing arts, for example singing. However, as they take part in regular three-hourly lessons, they aquire the skills and a good working knowledge of dance and drama. This naturally makes them thoroughly all-round musical theater performers.

So many adults have been turned off singing for life all because of one careless remark from a clumsy teacher, or having been excluded as a child from a choir or a school production at a sensitive time in their vocal development. There are others, however, that were lucky enough to have a teacher that inspired them and nurtured their musical passion. Singing classes at StageCoach aim to be fun, upbeat, challenging and lively while encouraging musical accuracy, good intonation, the development of a good musical ear and excellent vocal control.

When an adult says apologetically "I'm tone deaf!", what they actually mean is that they have no confidence in their own ability. Helping children (boys in particular) over a tricky patch in their vocal development, and at the same time improving their listening skills, goes a long way towards ensuring that the phrase "tone deaf" becomes obsolete! StageCoach offers a safe environment where kids are allowed to make a few vocal mistakes in singing classes, and then recover from them. This is imperative for any singer.

In short, within these classes of performing arts for children, the teaching of singing aims to help students to:
  • build up a wide repertoire of songs to sing for pleasure and performance
  • master the basic skills in vocal technique and breath control in order to develop vocal ability
  • Develop a sensitivity to the inter-relationship of words and music
  • Build up a basic understanding through singing work of key, pitch, rhythm, timbre, dynamics, speed, texture and vocal color.
